In the picturesque waters off the Lofoten Islands in Norway, a Swedish father and son, Soren Nilsson and Anders, recently lived every angler’s dream – a monumental encounter with a colossal cod that measured a staggering 5ft in length, weighing approximately 20kg. This incredible catch not only showcased their fishing prowess but also provided a feast fit for 35 people, making it a tale to remember.

The Lofoten Islands, renowned for their enchanting views of the northern lights and quaint fishing villages, served as the backdrop for this extraordinary adventure. Armed with determination and aided by rubber shad lures and pirks as bait, Soren and Anders engaged in a brief but intense struggle with the majestic skrei cod, eventually reeling in their prized catch.

For scale: When the massive cod was held upright, it came all the way up to Anders' chest in one photo

The sheer size of the cod was evident as Anders, with both arms, cradled the fish. In a striking photograph, the cod reached up to his chest, offering a perspective on the immense scale of their achievement. This magnificent creature, a migrating cod from the frigid waters of the Barents Sea, had ventured south to the coast of Norway for spawning, becoming the focus of their awe-inspiring fishing escapade.

In Norway, strict regulations prohibit private individuals from selling their catches, a rule that meant this substantial cod would not find its way to market. However, had it been caught by a commercial fisherman, its value could have reached upwards of £500, making it a prized commodity for high-end restaurants. Skrei cod, known for its lean meat and delicate flavor, is a culinary delight, although its scarcity has led some British seafood establishments to seek alternative options like the Alaska pollock due to the high costs associated with importing cod.

Due to strict fishing laws in Norway, private fisherman are not permitted to sell their catches but it could have been worth up to £500

Erik Axner, who organized the trip, highlighted the rarity of such a catch, emphasizing the skill, knowledge, and a touch of luck required to lure a skrei cod of this magnitude. This extraordinary fish, once filleted, would yield 7kg of pristine meat, enough to create 35 delectable portions for a fortunate group of diners.

While cod typically range between 5kg and 11kg, this particular catch surpassed expectations, leaving a lasting impression on the anglers and reaffirming the awe-inspiring wonders of the ocean. Although the world record for cod remains an astounding 96kg, the tale of the Cod-Father and Son stands as a testament to the thrill of the chase and the unparalleled experiences that the vast seas offer to those daring enough to explore them.
